چکیده

Avian physiologists have generally assumed that since birds lack sweat glands, cutaneous evaporation is negligible. However, recent data indicate that the skin represents a major avenue of evaporative water loss (EWL) in the Painted Quail (ExcaZfactoria chine&z), Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus), Budgerigar ( Melopsittacus undulatus), Zebra Finch (Poephi&z ca.stunotis) (Bernstein 1969, 1970, 1971a, b), and the Domestic Pigeon (Columba Z&a) (Smith 1969; Smith and Suthers 1969). Not all birds lose large amounts of water through the skin. SchmidtNielsen et al. ( 19’ 69) state that the skin plays a minor role in EWL in Ostriches (Struthio cameZus), contributing less than 2 percent of total evaporation at 40°C. The purpose of this study was to examine cutaneous evaporation in two North American desert-inhabiting birds, the Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) and the Poor-will ( PhaZaenoptiZus nuttalk). Oxygen consumption and EWL have been studied previously in both species over a wide range of ambient temperatures (Bartholomew et al. 1957; Bartholomew et al. 1962; Calder and Schmidt-Nielsen 1967; Lasiewski 1969; Lowe and Hinds 1969).

Evaporative water loss, relative water economy and evaporative partitioning of a heterothermic marsupial, the monito del monte (Dromiciops gliroides).

We examine here evaporative water loss, economy and partitioning at ambient temperatures from 14 to 33°C for the monito del monte (Dromiciops gliroides), a microbiotheriid marsupial found only in temperate rainforests of Chile. The monito's standard evaporative water loss (2.58 mg g(-1) h(-1) at 30°C) was typical for a marsupial of its body mass and phylogenetic position. Evaporative water loss...

I-25: Recurrent Pregnancy Loss; Updates in Etiologies, Diagnosis and Management

Background -Recurrent pregnancy loss defined as two or more miscarriage before 20 weeks of pregnancy affecting 1-5 % or women in reproductive age .There are many etiologies have been suggested, like Genetic, Immunologic, Thrombophila, Endocrine and Anatomic; but in 50% of cases, the exact etiology remains uncertain. Endometrium acts as biosensor of embryo quality and endometrium itself contribu...

Role of rainwater harvesting for improving the human well-being and ecosystem services

Ecosystem services are fundamental for human well-being and are the basis of rural livelihoods, particularly for poor people. Rainwater harvesting can serve as an opportunity to enhance ecosystem productivity, thereby improving livelihoods, human well-being, and economies. Rainwater harvesting has been shown to create synergies between landscape management and human well-being. These synergi...
